Sore throats 

Colds, most coughs, sinusitis, ear infections, sore throats, and other infections often get better without antibiotics, as your body can usually fight these infections on its own. So Sore throats usually gets better within 7 days, with or without antibiotics. Taking antibiotics makes bacteria that live inside your body more resistant so the antibiotics may not work when you really need them. 

Some pharmacies now offer a Pharmacy first sore throat service, this means that they can offer you advice and treatment on your sore throat without going through your GP. You can use this service as long as you are 

  • Over 5 years 
  • The duration is under 14 days
  • Patient is not immunosuppressed

(UTI) - Uncomplicated Lower urinary tract infections

Some pharmacies now offer a Pharmacy first for UTI's, this means that they can offer you advice and treatment without going through your GP. Females between the ages of 16-64 who feel they have a UTI can use this service, there are some exceptions who will have to contact their GP such as; 

  • Under 16 or over 65
  • Any Male
  • Pregnant
  • Diabetic
